Camp Description

The Kansas City, Missouri School District partners with local community organization to offer extended summer learning opportunities for studnets. The Super Sonic Plus camps are partnerships with local community organizations. These three-week, full-day camps are an extention of Summer School with an emphasis on fun, experiential learning activities, physcial education and exposure to cultural arts.

ArtsTech Offers:

Arts, Readiness & Technology Summer Camp

ArtsTech’s Art, Readiness & Technology (ART) Summer Camp will target two age groups of students—students (ages 13-15) who are too young to work but are in need of constructive summer activities that will strengthen their academic skills and increase their employability and students who are old enough to find employment but who lack employable skills or who have limited opportunity for employment. ArtsTech proposes a three-prong approach for its structured, interactive, hands-on and experiential Extended Summer Camp. ArtsTech will provide an educational experience which will increase students’ knowledge and skills in the areas of Arts and Core Skill Development, Job Readiness, and Technology: Computer Repair and Trouble Shooting. This camp, called Arts, Readiness, & Technology (ART), will engage students in learning activities which will continue their progress in the core subject areas of math and reading, as well as provide learning experiences that  engage students in a variety of academic areas. These important areas include, but are not limited to arts & crafts, music & dance, cultural awareness, history, technology and job readiness. Upon completion of the ART Summer Camp, each student will receive at no cost a computer they have refurbished themselves, a computer repair kit, Pre-A+ Certification, valuable job readiness skill and the experience of interviewing with corporate employers, and experience creating a community art project that will be developed by the Summer Camp participants.

Building

The Center

The greatest physical asset in ArtsTech’s future plans is its headquarters, a 32,000 square-foot building in the Crossroads Arts District which provides capabilities unique among the region’s youth arts organizations.  In addition to ArtsTech’s administrative offices, the building’s first floor houses some of the most comprehensive facilities of their kind for a non-profit organization, including fully functional studios for the creation of Ceramics, Photography, Computer/Graphic Design, Visual Arts and Silk Screening.

A
rts and Core Skill Development

The visual arts program teaches art skills, enhances self-confidence, encourages creativity in students, and enhances decision-making, teamwork and communication skills. Art is more than paintings on a wall to be looked at but never touched. Art is interactive, engaging, edgy, controversial, spiritual, therapeutic, influential, and mostly, a difference maker. Art can tell a story, increase a young person’s imagination and creativity, make a student think critically, and soothe the soul.

Job Readiness and Life Skills Developement

To get a job you need to prepare for the job and that is exactly what the job readiness program accomplishes. Youth will discover their own skill sets, prepare resumes, explore job markets, participate in realistic job interviews, and also develop a long-term plan to obtain the career of their choice.

Technology: Computer Repair and Trouble Shooting

Youth will demonstrate increased knowledge regarding personal attitude, accomplishment, and life/work skills through active engagement in ArtsTech’s ART Summer Camp. Computer repair/ troubleshooting and software installation will be the initial skills developed.  ArtsTech will incorporate the following components to address students’ technology skill development needs:

 Computer Repair Training

The CRP program is ArtsTech’s effort to reduce the “Digital Divide” as well as to reuse and recycle computer equipment. By putting quality refurbished computers in peoples hands instead of landfills. The usual eligibility for obtaining a refurbished PC is dependent on the individual being eligible for one of several government programs or working for a non-profit organization that serves such individuals. Free and Reduced school lunches, Medicaid, food stamps, SSI, receiving services for the disabled, are examples of programs by which participation ensures eligibility.  ART Summer Camp participants will work on the actual computer they will receive upon completion of the camp.

The troubleshooting class provides a hands-on opportunity for youth to master basic techniques and skills for diagnosing, repairing, and upgrading computers. Upon successful completion of the hour course, learners will be given the computer they refurbished, along with the toolkit used in class. These repair and diagnostic skills can save hundreds of dollars in costly repairs and down time.

Flash 20/12 –N– Your Super Grill

Flash 20/12 –N- Your Super Grill is a multimedia project built around a specially-created comic book that teaches the importance of good oral hygiene, explains the dangers of popular fads like tongue piercing and metallic/jeweled teeth applications, and gets young people to visit dentists.  The multimedia materials were created by Storytellers’ professional artists and young artists hired from the MyARTS program and students from the Kansas City, Missouri School District. Sponsored by The REACH Healthcare Foundation and continuing through the generosity of the Healthcare Foundation of Greater Kansas City. Students received no-cost general dental care through the program. Dental services are preformed at McCoy Elementary School dental clinic sponsored by the Samuel Rodgers Health Center.
