We all live for the weekends and last weekend was very special for ArtsTech. On Friday afternoon, ArtsTech hosted a retirement reception for Kent Jewell, former Executive Director for Benilde Hall. Kent dedicated his life to helping others, especially veterans and other men with substance abuse and mental health issues. Benilde Hall and the community is better off due to Kent’s efforts.

Later that evening, ArtsTech hosted a special event, Teen Cypher Battle” featuring child phenom “Lay Lay” as a judge.  ArtsTech was hoping for 100 youth and 200 young people showed up. Tech9ine came by to support the young artists. Another great event where everybody had a fun and safe time. As the young people stated, “This event was LIT!”

On Saturday, ArtsTech was buzzing with activity. Healing Pathways held a Board meeting, I was meeting with a couple of community members, and Taylor Brown was leading the preparations for Saturday night’s “Paint and Sip” event. ArtsTech Board member, Melissa McKenzie, pulled together a group of influential African-American women and sororities for a “Paint and Sip” extravaganza to honor “Women’s History Month.” Of special note, ArtsTech had its own young women of color at the event to connect with these powerful women and learn what it takes to be a successful black woman in Kansas City. This event generated $3,000 towards this summer’s youth trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico for the annual Folk Art Festival and our general youth programs. Sunday was another busy day with Healing Pathways conducting therapy sessions for their children and families that had a murdered parent. Healing Pathways is an all-volunteer organization that is a great community asset providing a special service to our traumatized children. Sadly, their services are needed more than ever due to the increasing number of homicides.

Your financial support allows ArtsTech to have these impactful weekends. Please consider donating through our monthly giving program. Of course, a one-time or any gift is greatly appreciated.

Please stay safe during this Coronavirus outbreak. ArtsTech is doing all it can to keep our youth, staff, and guests safe.

Thank you.

Kansas City and the youth of our community are at a crossroads, and ArtsTech is determined to make a positive and lasting difference. In addition to partnering with others throughout the KC area who also recognize this significant and worthy opportunity, ArtsTech needs your help.

Our mission is simple. We better the lives of underserved urban youth through the development of artistic, technical, health, and educational skills. We accomplish this by operating a center in the Crossroads District of Kansas City that provides educational and health services for youth as well as marketable, hands-on training for them in visual arts, graphic design, ceramics and technology. Additionally, we build and manage collaborative public/private partnerships that benefit our community with the assistance of numerous artists, funders, patrons and volunteers.

As you contemplate your philanthropic options by year-end, as well as in the coming year, please consider ArtsTech.
