Tru-kechia Smith brings over 25 years of experience in the nonprofit sector and has been recognized for
her ability to leverage organizational strengths to position nonprofit businesses for success, driving
mission focused results. As a leader, she possesses a strong record of accomplishment in program and
resource development marked by winning several local and federal grants and managing millions of
dollars in contracts.
A native of Kansas City, Missouri and graduate of Northeast High School, Tru-Kechia developed a deep
passion for philanthropic work at an early age leading to her appreciation for the nonprofit industry. She
earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and Master of Public Health Administration
emphasizing Policy from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri.
Tru-kechia is known for her strategic vision and collaborative approach and is committed to ensuring
programs and initiatives operate through the lens of community, prioritizing the needs of people.
Equity, diversity, and inclusion along with community permeates every aspect of the organizations and
partners she touches.
Prior to joining ArtsTech, she was Program Director and Director of Organizational Growth at Bridging
the Gap (BTG) for five years. Her key responsibilities included the oversight and direction for various
environmental programs. Tru-kechia ushered in a community-centric approach that increased the
number of households in communities of concern who benefited from water and energy efficiency
programs in Kansas City.
She also spent eight years working for American Heart Association (AHA) Midwest Affiliate as a Regional
Director of Health Equity, Multicultural Initiatives and Community Engagement. Tru-kechia was
recognized by AHA for her advocacy and public policy efforts. She also led several teams and various
programs and mobilized communities throughout Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska addressing public
health issues emphasizing heart disease and social determinants of health.
In her free time, Tru-kechia provides resources and advocates for individuals with housing challenges in
Kansas City, Missouri.
